As you know from my last newsletter, I am navigating Veronica Funk's mentorship program through Mastrius. I facilitate a small group of artists who want to learn from a master or professional artist to boost their skills and confidence. The small group size is designed to share ideas and practical information and receive feedback about their work. Veronica's group has a valuable, unique focus. It is geared towards creating a body of work, from concept to narrative, writing statements, press releases, and more, so that in 6-8 months, members will have developed a body of work for a show or gallery. The group launched on June 26 and had a fantastic first session. I met talented artists and look forward to working and learning with this group. This month's assignment is to document (either in a sketchbook or on a smartphone) things that catch our attention. I always have my phone ready to snap a pic of something exciting or beautiful. I could leave it at that, but I decided to take those pics and turn them into drawings and small watercolour sketches. I've done three so far, and I have some sketches I did before this group, but I want to push the ideas further and experiment more with materials and composition. I will work on this task during my residency at the gallery since there is a beautiful pond across the street and a small nature trail full of lovely spots to explore.
