Above are the pieces I worked on during my residency. I decided to focus on just these two pieces during my time there because, as you can see, they are very detailed and require time to complete. Despite my detailed work, I enjoy the process because it’s meditative and calming. Once these paintings are completed, they will join the Voiceless Collection. A Little Bit About Materials I Use All the paintings in my Voiceless Collection are created on Ampersand Aquabords instead of watercolour paper. Aquabords are textured, highly absorbent, acid-free clay and mineral ground surfaces designed for watercolour and gouache. The texture is similar to that of cold-pressed watercolour paper. The clay surface sits on a premium warp-resistant hardboard, and it’s archival (museum grade), meaning the painting will last for years and will not turn the painting yellow. The result or quality of the painting is similar to a fresco. What’s even more attractive about this way of painting is that glass is not required if you decide to frame the paintings. The idea of not needing glass when framing my artwork is an exciting concept for me. When people look at the piece, the view of the painting is not obstructed by the glare caused by the glass and lights. Most importantly, the barrier between the viewer and the artwork (excuse the pun) is shattered. All that is needed to protect the surface is a fixative and varnish to seal the watercolour and protect it from UV rays. An alternative is to rub Dorland Wax on the surface. There are other fantastic reasons why I use Aquabord, but I will share them in my next blog. So, stay tuned. Does this mean I will no longer paint using watercolour paper? No. I enjoy working with beautiful, thick cotton paper and will use it to create smaller pieces to add variety to my work.
